WINSC AGM in Hobart:
I was pleasantly surprised to have several industry people present at our AGM which was held on the Friday 2nd November at the Seafood Training Tasmania training rooms at 2A Gladstone Street, Hobart. Thank you for taking the time to attend given that most of you had been in Hobart for the whole week for Seafood Directions.
WINSC are very grateful to Seafood Training Tasmania for the generous offer to use these rooms for both our Board Meeting and AGM and also to Karen, in the office who organised our morning and afternoon teas. Thank you Rory and Karen, your efforts were very much appreciated.
Our guest speakers at the AGM were Tara Francis and Hilary Revill. Tara, from Relationships Australia in Mackay, Queensland presented packages to all attendees while outlining opportunities that seafood industry people have for advise, counselling and literature to assist with pressures on relationships relative to the impacts of rezoning, restructuring and displacement from the industry. This information was well received and I thank Tara and her organisation for making this available to us.
Hilary Revill, from DPI Tasmania, shared her story with us of her journey from working in the UK in fisheries there to her experiences with fisherman in her efforts to collect data in the Lobster, Crab and Scallops fisheries of Tasmania. Hilary is one of very few women working in this area of fisheries. Her story was very interesting and entertaining. Many grass roots fishers could relate to these stories.
Each guest speaker received a small presentation pack of Bundaberg Rum Fudge.

WINSC AGM & Conference in Brisbane in 2008
At the WINSC AGM & Board Meeting in Hobart it was decided to conduct the 2008 conference, Board Meeting and AGM in Brisbane.
This conference will be held in Brisbane on 1st and 2nd August prior to the commencement of Australasian Aquaculture 08 which is set down from 3rd – 6th Aug. The last WINSC conference held in Brisbane was in 2001 in conjunction with Seafood Directions.
It is envisaged to hold AGM & Board meeting one day with some field visits on the other day. A WINSC dinner has proven to be very popular in past years and holding our conference in conjunction with other industry events has drawn numbers from that event.
Brisbane offers heaps of interesting opportunities in August. How about a bridge climb, join in the Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run on the 3rd or the start of Australasian Aquaculture 08. Stay a little longer for the Brisbane Exhibition from the 7th -16th August or the Brisbane International Boat Show start organizing yourself by looking for those cheap airfares now.

FRDC BREAKFAST REPORT by
Abby Ward
As a result of my successful appointment on the Rural Industry youth advisory group for the Department of Forestry and Fisheries I was invited to join the FRDC ‘breakfast with the board’ on Friday 2nd November. Also attending the breakfast were some conference participants from various other fishery sectors whose attendance at the conference was sponsored by FRDC.
Dr Patrick Horne, director of FRDC, invited breakfast guests to speak to the group about issues and challenges facing their particular area.
A recurring theme from each speaker was their lack of time to stand up and put in the extra work required to keep their particular industry going and many felt sole responsibility in certain sectors where others were not willing to assist with necessary steps such as implementing EMS strategies/plans.
Many speaking at the breakfast were quite emotional when explaining their situation, especially those in Western Australia where rezoning of Marine Protection Areas has taken place and in many instances fisherman who rely on those particular areas are not told or given forewarning leading to the financial detriment of not only their businesses but their families.
FIRST YEAR DIRECTOR REFLECTIONS & NEWS ON PEAK INDUSTRY BODY FORUM
My visit to Tasmania as Director of NSW WINSC capped off a year of talking to directors around Australia and New Zealand and finally seeing everyone face to face.
This is essential to bring a true perspective to who we are, that we are real, and that we can collectively influence the future for our industry.
My attendance in the morning at the industry meeting called to discuss the development of a Peak
Industry Body highlighted the need for women at the table.
There were three women present. The meeting was well attended and all participants were encouraged to have input into the meeting.
In general it was collaboratively agreed that a Peak Industry body was essential, and a steering
committee should be formed. My understanding was that a paper would be distributed to all for further discussion. Funding was still an issue. A timeline strategy was defined. There was insufficient clarity on dealing with State based issues in the structure. The terms of reference will be important, the meeting was not the forum for discussion on issues. I was disappointed that the Chair implied that WINSC had indicated it wasn't interested in being a part of the sub committee but was interested in being consulted with. I indicated that WINSC did indicate its interest in being involved in the Steering committee and was disappointed that I didn't have the prior email with me.
I saw little point in arguing the point at the table preferring this to be in writing.
I left Tasmania, encouraged to pursue my environmental issues in NSW and utilise this to
expand the NSW membership base by positive contacts.
Overall a positive meeting which has set positive goals for the year.
regards
Mary Howard
4th AUSTRALIAN SEAFOOD INDUSTRY AWARD
The 4th Australian Seafood Industry Awards were held at Wrest Point Casino on Thursday 1st November 2007.
Many attendees arrived by boat, after enjoying a cruise of the Derwent River.
They feasted on delicious Tasmanian seafood, including both wild caught and aquaculture abalone, southern rock lobster, scallops, oysters, mussels, salmon and blue eye tevella.
They also enjoyed local wine and beer.
The Award winners were
1. Environment – Austral Fisheries
2. Seafood Industry Producer – Abascus Fisheries
3. Seafood Industry Promotion – Sydney Fish Market
4. Research & Development – Seafood Secrets
5. Seafood Industry Training – Seafood Directions
` 6. Seafood Restaurant – Café del Giorno
7. Seafood Icon – Col Dyke
The highlights of the night for me included hearing who the Award winners were, even though none of the NT finalists won, the fabulous Tasmanian seafood, the wonderful seafood themed decorations, the cruise on the Derwent and, of course, great networking opportunities.

Seafood Directions 2007 Abby ward
My involvement of SD 2007 didn’t extend beyond the trade show this year however the trade show was by far the largest that Seafood Directions has experienced and by all accounts was very well received. Trade show exhibitors included, financial institutions, Information technology, suppliers, producers and seafood businesses. As well as some government stands from FRDC and Seafood CRC.
Reports from those attending Seafood Directions regarding the content were positive although general attendance numbers were down on previous years.

REPORT ON SEAFOOD DIRECTIONS 2007 AND WINSC CONFERENCE 2007 KAREN HOLDER
I attended Seafood Directions 2007 in Hobart Tasmania 31st Oct – 2nd Nov as a grass roots fisher with my husband, along with a reasonable contingent from SA I found it very hectic with a large social component being the welcome reception, a reception at Government House which was a real opportunity many of us would never have to see inside of such a stately building and its furnishings, and lastly the awards dinner held on the Thursday evening at Wrest Point Casino which we arrived at via a boat trip of about half an hour. Given I had a lot to do with the holding of the SA Seafood awards in August and one of our nominees in the Seafood Restaurant award was a finalist I was really looking forward to the night. It certainly delivered. The meal was a true indication of the wonderful seafood available and beautifully presented and cooked. The evening was topped off when the SA restaurant won its category. It was a great end to the conference and certainly much networking was still happening well into the early hours of the next day.
The conference itself contained a huge amount of information and to best utilise our time I often went to the other session from my husband. I found particularly interesting and useful co-management by Peter Rogers former CEO of Department of Fisheries WA giving an insight into the responsibilities of all parties and the possible benefits and pitfalls. I also felt that a talk contained in the People in Industry session by John Atkinson HR Manager MG Kailis P/L titled Fit for Life = Fit for Work detailing the MG Kailis drug and alcohol policy, its development, implementation and support very worthwhile. An inspirational speech within the Accreditation session from Tom Mirabella a net fisher from the Port Phillip Bay area that focused on the attainment of EMS and ended with the fact that within a week from the conference they would lose access to much of their current available fishing area was not only inspirational but was acknowledged with a “special award” at the awards dinner with a holiday package for a couple of nights to help with the obvious stress. Tim did acknowledge that the EMS whilst it had not saved them it had helped in having a restructure package put forward and a reasonable time frame, but at the end of the day they were ousted on the whims of a politician and in someone’s words “a philandering recreational well known in the media”.
A strong message from the conference was at the very beginning and came through a number of times started with the opening session featuring Mitch Tonks CEO Fishworks UK.
In a country that treats chefs and foodies like rock stars Mitch opened a specialist Fishmongers in 1995 and grew with the addition of a seafood café above the shop to a number of outlets, a cookery school, TV program and home delivery service. He was however espousing the message that they required good quality frozen product. My first reaction was to dislike the messenger because I didn’t like the message, after all he had started out with fresh fish as his base and succeeded very well. He had been in Australia for about 2 weeks and was very complimentary of our seafood. However the frozen message was again featured in the Changing Markets session with Paul Catalano of Catalano Seafood who now don’t feature any fresh seafood in their immensely popular retail shop, it is all frozen. They have developed a process for achieving good results and this was reinforced when they were the recipients of the National research and development award.
With the need to take in much information it is only later you are able to take more from a conference but I would like to see the FRDC breakfast for grass roots fishers open to participant fishers who are not subsidised by FRDC and choose to go.
The WINSC Board meeting on the Friday post the awards was a great opportunity to meet the faces that belong to the voices and it was heartening to have 2 observers one from SA and the other from WA. I think it would be valuable if incumbent board members were to attend the board meeting if at all possible even if only as observers.
A further worthwhile point was 2 members off attending the FRDC grass roots breakfast and the working group for the formation of a new national body highlighting the value of the networking associated with a group such as WINSC and its diverse membership range. Later in our board meeting in a further demonstration of the value of the network ABC radio countrywide program attended to interview board members and Mary Howard was able to speak to a different audience on the subject of WATER and its management.
The board meeting primarily became a strategic planning exercise with Tanya Adams expertly utilising the whiteboard and pulling threads from general discussion to provide a good strategic direction. I believe this value was highlighted via the talk from Jo Ruscoe of FRDC people development program and the link with a strong strategic direction and hopefully good recognition from departments from whom funding is sought. By the end of a productive day each state had a goal which I believe will help the group to remain focussed.

AGM SPEAKERS BY
DONNA WELLS
It was pleasing to note that many people made the effort to attend the AGM 2007. The WINSC gathering in Hobart has been billed as a mini-conference.and was held in the Seafood Training Tasmania rooms. On the day, we had presentations from the following people:
- Jo-anne Ruscoe, the Project Manager – People Development, from FRDC who spoke of the opportunities available to people in the seafood industry and the FRDC People Development project.
- Hillary Revill – who works for DPI - Tasmania and talked to us about different aspects of her career in the seafood industry and her links to the catching sector. I thought Hillary would make an excellent WINSC member.
- Tara Francis – came from Queensland and represented Relationships Australia and spoke to the group about a programme which had been set up in Queensland to provide support and counselling to fishing families. Of particular interest was a unit on husband/wife working partnerships and business problems they may experience. The programme could be taken to anywhere in Australia but at present was only available in Queensland. Tara also attended our Dinner at the Marque IV Restaurant.
The dinner was also attended by these NZ Seafood Directions conference delegates;
Sharon Larsen, Fishing and Vessel Operations Sector Manager for SITO; Nici Gibbs who is a Policy Manager for the Seafood Industry Council (SeaFIC) and Tania McPherson, a Senior Policy Analyst of Customary Fisheries, for Te Ohu Kai Moana (TOKM).

Mr Marshall is one of only 16 Australians to receive a 2007 Nuffield Scholarship. Nuffield Farming Scholarships, each worth $25,000, give young Australian farmers the opportunity to travel internationally and explore primary production issues and opportunities in a global context. There are about 1300 Nuffield scholars worldwide. Mr Marshall will use his scholarship to investigate regional brands and how company-branded products can drive market pull and consumer awareness. Mr Marshall’s Nuffield Farming Scholarship is the first to be sponsored by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, highlighting the Corporation’s commitment to developing people in the industry. The Nuffield program will provide an excellent opportunity for Lester to learn from others and bring this knowledge and innovation back to Australia. Lester will leave Australia in either February or June 2008 for a compulsory Global Focus Program. This will involve travel to China, North America, South America and Europe investigating agricultural marketing and trade issues, environmental issues and experiencing the different social and cultural aspects of each region. Following the initial six-week program, the scholars will go their individual ways to pursue specific study programs in the country or countries of their choice.
